Polly Sookraj

Polly Sookraj the nightingale of Trinidad and Tobago. Her parents Patiya and Sookraj were very talented musicians and singers. Polly grew up with her brother Sagar Sookraj and Rajdai Sookraj who themselves were excellent musicians. The late Sagar was very instrumental in Polly’s success as one of Trinidad’s Top Female Vocalists. Success and fame started at a very early age for her. Rajdai Sookraj was the leader of the Bharat Sangeet Orchestra of which Polly was a member for many years. Polly entered the Mastana Bahar Competition, in so doing the leader of the BWIA National Indian Orchestra, which was the accompanying band for Mastana Bahar at the time, saw the incredible talent in this young lady and he immediately asked her to join the band. Polly freelanced with many bands as a singer. 1986-1988 she was awarded a scholarship to study in India through ICCR at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra. On her return to Trinidad she sang for many years with the Manoranjan Orchestra. Her articulate and melodious approach to her singing served to win her the prestigious Nafeita award in Trinidad for three years running (1989-1991). Polly, is a very accomplished singer, she toured extensively throughout USA, Canada, UK, Suriname and Jamaica. In 1993 and 1994, she distinguished herself by singing with playback singer, Kumar Sanu on his West Indies tour. June 1994, Polly married Parmeshwar Gosyne who is also a very versatile singer and musician. They are now dubbed the “PG’s”. They both teamed up and launched the popular CD “Prayog”. She is the proud mother of the handsome young Yogesh. Polly continues her singing career in Canada, with her unsurpassed range, she stands apart from her contemporaries.
